Film about Lomachenko and Usyk will be shown at the Pokrov International Orthodox Film Festival

The XVIII Pokrov International Orthodox Film Festival has started at the festival of Orthodox cinema "Pokrov", it is held in an online format. The opening ceremony is broadcast locally from studios in Kyiv and Moscow.

The XVIII Pokrov International Orthodox Film Festival has started at the festival of Orthodox cinema “Pokrov”, it is held in an online format. The opening ceremony is broadcast locally from studios in Kyiv and Moscow.

You can watch it on the “Spas”TV channel and on the Internet. The theme of the festival is “Don’t be afraid, only believe”. 68 films from seven countries: Ukraine, Russia, Israel, France, Belarus, Armenia and Serbia are taking part in the main competition of the festival.

For nine days, all films will be on the website of the film festival . They will have free access from November 13 to 21.

A documentary film “Hello, brother, Christ is risen” directed by the monk Illarion (Moiseyev) will be The opening film of the festival. It is about faith, friendship, patriotism of Ukrainian boxers Vasyl Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk.

The President of the Pokrov festival, Member of Parliament Andrii Derkach in his welcoming speech, emphasized that despite the difficulties imposed by the coronavirus, life and work are ongoing.

“It is never too much repeating the words of gratitude to everyone who makes Orthodox cinema. Frequently, these are films-experiences that make you look at life in a new way, re-evaluate your actions and thoughts. Everything in life begins with faith and the power of mind. If each of us cares about others, then we will move from the path of suffering to the path of light, get rid of the coronavirus and other problems. If we think about unification, everything in the world will work out by itself. We only need to correct our thoughts, “-commented Derkach.

The head of the project, Archbishop Iona of Obukhov, commented on the theme of the festival: “The words” Do not be afraid “are often found in the Gospel. This is one of the most common phrases of Christ in the Gospel – “Do not be afraid!” . Metropolitan Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Volokolamsk gave a welcoming speech to the audience :

“I want these films that we watch help us enhance our perception of the Orthodox faith and the world around us. May they help us become kinder, become closer to Christ, learn how to fulfill His commandments”, – pointed out Hilarion.

The Viceroy of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan Pavlo, emphasized the need for cohesion: “We are inseparable and we have nothing to split. We have one history, one Protection of Our Most Holy Lady, we must have one thing. We don’t have to share God, we must not share history, we must to see a brother in each other, the image of Christ, “said Metropolitan Pavlo.

The Director Mykola Dostal, winner of the Grand Prix of the Pokrov festival 2016, noted that faith should unite: “ You know how they say that faith should unite,  so we should set an example for hostile elements, that we need to communicate, be friends, connect with each other, “- commented Dostal.

The Pokrov International Orthodox Film Festival has been held since 2003, it was held with the blessing of His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine Volodymyr. Nowadays the festival is held under the blessing of Onufriy – the Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine. The film festival is held annually,  the aim is popularizing films with Christian content. The President of the Film Festival is Member of Parliament of Ukraine AndriiDerkach. This year, for the first time in history of the festival, the Pokrov festival is being held online.
