Today’s decision of the Verkhovna Rada about Channel 112 and NewsOne is transition from parasitism by slogans about European democracy to the establishment of a dictatorship in the country.
Derkach is sure that such decision is a blow to the freedom of speech in Ukraine.
«Today’s decision of the Verkhovna Rada about Channel 112 and NewsOne is transition from parasitism by slogans about European democracy to the establishment of a dictatorship. I want to remind to the authorities that freedom of speech cannot be selective. But in general, we need to look at those, who today voted for the closing of these channels. As history shows, such “fighters” firstly burn books, then their authors and then readers», stated Andrey Derkach. blockquote>
Deputy noted that Ukraine in the international ranking of press freedom has decreased from 87 seats to 101 seats over the past 10 years.
«Our Top ten includes Gabon and Nepal. I suppose that after today’s decision of Rada, we will easily surpass in rankings Uganda and Nigeria», said Derkach. .
However, the Deputy said that pressure from the authorities on the media has only intensified lately.
« At the beginning of this year I`m together with media representatives, signed an open appeal to the country’s leadership, in which we demanded to protect freedom of speech in the country. We demanded to calm down the security forces and the National Council on television. Raid to the «1 + 1», arson to the «Inter», the using of paramilitary formations to harassment of journalists and the media. Attempts by National Public Television and Radio Company to throw out of the air of the channel UA:Pershiy the program «Dobrogo ranku, Kraino!» (translator note: «Good morning, Country!») for the inviting to the studio a disagreeable politician. It is common practice now «- said Derkach. Blockquote>
The Deputy also reminded that he had always opposed propaganda in journalism, regardless of who led the country.
«Back in 2015, I am with my colleagues created an inter-factional association «Forbidden to Forbid» because of an attack on human rights and freedom of speech. Our monitoring of the human rights situation in Ukraine was transmitted to the President of PACE Lilian Mori Pasquier to the Monitoring Committee for rapporteurs on Ukraine », concluded Derkach. blockquote>
